PXPOHIO’s History of Printing in Ohio

From the early days of Lawhead Press in Athens, OH, through the various locations as Pony-X-Press Printing Services, up to today’s PXPOHIO, we have always put the customer first.

It all started with Lawhead Press in Athens, Ohio

The roots of PXPOHIO go all the way back to 1911 in Athens County, Ohio. There, a company known as The Lawhead Press, Inc. began as a full-service commercial printer serving Athens to Columbus, Ohio, as well as Parkersburg and Charleston, West Virginia. By the 1960’s Lawhead’s Columbus market share was growing. Salesmen Glen Downey and Gene Scott decided that the time was right to start a new company as a subsidiary of Lawhead to serve this area. So, in 1971, Pony-X-Press Fast Copy Service Center opened its doors on East Broad Street in Downtown, Columbus. Pony-X-Press would continue to grow and expand its capabilities throughout the 70’s moving to a number of larger facilities along the way.

Winds of Change

By the mid 80’s Pony-X-Press had separated from Lawhead Press and was now under the ownership of Glenn Downey and Gene Scott. The 80’s and 90’s were a time of great change for the printing industry as newer computer technologies came into play. Current COO and Technology Analyst Dan Robinson played a major role in implementing these new technologies. Pony-X-Press was ahead of its time leading the way in the area of environmental awareness by pursuing “green” policies and processes such as waterless printing. The company moved to its current location in 1993.

Innovation and Growth

By the year 2000, the company had moved to a completely digital pre-press system. Highlights from the 2000’s included adding digital storefront ordering as well as a digital press with variable data printing capabilities. In 2005, Pony-X-Press changed it’s name to PXPOHIO to better reflect the companies growth beyond its original quick printing services, as well as its growing leadership within the printing arena.

In 2013, company president Gene Scott passed away suddenly, leaving ownership to his wife Linda and having son Greg Scott take over as new and current President and CEO. In September of 2015, PXPOHIO would see a sudden and significant growth after a merger with Odyssey Press, Inc. and Colorfast Digital of Westerville, Ohio. Again in 2023, with the acquisition of Executive Mailing Solutions, PXPOHIO significantly increased its level of experience, services and capabilities. These collaborations allow PXPOHIO to institute a stronger position within Central Ohio as one of the more robust, well established full-service printing companies in the region.
